How to spot an avatar from a real human

This week, we were thrilled to have our Chief Security Officer, David Clarke, share his expertise on AI and fraud at the annual ACFE Europe Conference.

To truly showcase the power of our avatar technology, we created a digital twin of David, using his conference attire. And the results were shocking.

The scarily realistic video prompted an important question: how can we spot a real human from their avatar?

The eyes don’t lie (usually)

The old adage rings true: the eyes are often the windows to the soul. Here's what to look for visually:

  1. Look for micro expressions: does the avatar David blink naturally?
  2. ‘Perfection’ on facial details: is David’s face ‘too’ smooth or flawless to be true?
  3. Hands, hands, hands! Did his gestures make sense and is in line with his speech?

What about the voice?

  1. Intonation and rhythm: the real David speaks a lot slower than the avatar David. But this could depend on the specific persons being recorded.
  2. Look for pauses: the real David paused for a much longer period.
  3. Lip-syncing accuracy: does the voice match the lip movements?

And of course, look for cues in another language – can David speak Mandarin with a perfectly native accent in real life?

What to expect in the future

If our David VS. Avatar comparison left you questioning reality, think about what the future holds. As AI advances, the distinction between an avatar and a real human will only shrink.
